Probability Experiments
This week we are learning about probability. We have been conducting "math experiments" with spinners and bags of cubes to learn about which events are likely, unlikely, certain and impossible.
Here is a group collecting data by pulling cubes out of a bag. They did some a great job working together on this one!
Happy Earth Day
This week we celebrated Earth Day and talked about what things we could do to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Help us by joining hands to save our planet!
Animal Studies
Last week our class visited the NC Zoo at Asheboro and learned some amazing facts about the animals of Africa and North America. On Thursday morning, the students did a little extra research of their own on an animal of choice. Groups of 2-3 students went to another classroom to become experts on that animal, and then worked together to create a diaplay to "teach" the rest of the class. I am very proud of the hard work that the kids put into their projects. I am even more amazed at the level of intensity they had about learning more. I had many who asked to get on computers and grab extra books to research more. BRAVO TO YOU FIRST GRADERS!
After making our posters, our class had a "gallery walk" where they read, and commented on their peers work. Everyone left nice feedback and had fun learning about zebras, lions, alligators, giraffes, monkeys, bears, seals and elephants.

The Bulldog Run
This Friday, our class participated in the Bulldog Run. Our motto this year was: Smart Boards for Smart kids. Not only did we support our school by raising money, we got some great excercise and an opportunity to show our school spirit!
All students received a t-shirt where we tallied their laps and afterwards we enjoyed some water and a tasty snack.
Thank you to all those parents who came out to support our school!

Welcome Miss. Cox!
Today we have a new teacher helper! Miss Madison Cox is a junior at Clayton High School who will be helping out in our class this spring. She is participating in an Early Childhood Development course where she is learning how to interact with young students. I am very excited to have her since this is exactly how I got into teaching! Welcome to our little family Miss Cox!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
Last Friday we celebrated the birthday of one of our favorite authors, Dr. Theodore Seuss Geisel! We learned many facts about the life of Dr. Seuss and what it was like to be an author-illustrator. We put our own pencils to work writing about our favorite characters in our writers notebooks.
We read the story of the Lorax and made Lorax hats to remind us to be responsible stewards of the environment and kind to others. We ended our day with a tasty treat of green eggs and ham!

Don't worry Sam I am! These green eggs and ham were made from pretzels and m&ms. As you can tell, we sure do love to eat in 1st grade. :)

Celebrating the 100th day!
On February 8th our class celebrated the 100th day of school! We began our day by making 100th day books answering questions like:
What would you do with $100?
What have you learned in 100 days?
My parents have told me 100 times to...
Everyone's answers were so creative. Here was one of my personal favorites. :)

In math we practiced counting by tens by making fruit loop necklaces. Yum!

To show that we are 100 days smarter, we also made hundred hats by gluing and drawing 10 objects on each strip of our hat. Don't we look fancy?

The 100th day sure was fun!
